Tracing the New England Patriots Logo
1. Right-click > Copy
this logo:
2. In Illustrator, press CTRL+V to Paste.
3. Open the Layers (F7). Double-click Layer 1.
Name it "Original", Lock it, and Dim it to 25%. Press
OK
4. Create a New Layer. Double-Click it.
Name it Trace and Hit OK.
5. Press CTRL (+) to Zoom In. Use the Spacebar and the mouse
to move the document around, if necessary.
6. Select the Pen Tool (
).
Make sure your Fill/Stroke is set to No Fill/Black Stroke.
7. Begin by tracing the red tails of the logo.
First Shape:
- 1 - Click
- 2 - Drag
- 3 - Drag, click the anchor point to get
rid of the second handle
- 4- Drag, click the anchor point to get
rid of the second handle
- 5 - Drag
- 6 - Drag to complete the shape
Second Shape:
- 1- Click
- 2 - Drag, click the anchor point to get
rid of the second handle
- 3 - Drag, click the anchor point to get
rid of the second handle
- 4 - Drag to complete the shape
8. The HEAD part of the logo should be done
focusing on the outer parts.
A total of 15 anchor points are
needed.

The Head:
- 1- Click

- Click at point 1 to finish

9. For the STAR, use the
Pen Tool and create the star by clicking (no dragging).
10. For the FACE, use the Pen Tool. Use the image below as a
guide.
11. Next, unlock the "Trace" Layer.
Click on the Selection Tool and move the Original logo to
the side of the Trace (or below it).
To Sample the Colors:
12. Open the Swatches
(Window > Swatches).
13. Expand the Swatches palette so the empty
slots are visible.
14. Click on the Eyedropper Tool. Make sure
the Fill is upfront.
15. Hold the Shift key and click on the color
in the original logo.
16. DRAG the FILL to the SWATCHES.
17. In the Trace, select each portion and
Fill it with the colors in the Swatches
18. The finished version:
