(Print this Page)

Designing a Custom Chocolate Bar Wrapper

Your Design MUST Include:

  • Product Name
  • Nutritional Facts box (actual or creative)
  • Bar Code
  • Net Wt 2.6 oz. (73 g)

I'm Looking For:

  • Marketable creativity. Your product design should complement the brand name.
  • Color and typography. Your colors should be chosen carefully. Remember the rules of type. Install all your fonts and use The Font Thing. Copy and outline all fonts before the final submission!!
  • An intentional design style. Your design should be either contemporary, funky, minimal, playful, retro, grungy, techno, etc.
  • NO SPELLING ERRORS!
  • Attention to detail. It must be perfect.

Concept Sketches

  • The FIRST step in this project is to produce idea sketches from which to work.
  • Submit to me a minimum of 3 sketches before working in Illustrator

Creating a Template

  1. Purchase the chocolate bar that you will custom wrap
  2. Using a ruler, scissors, pen/pencil and regular paper, carefully measure to determine:
    • the width
    • the wraparound dimensions (include an additional 0.5" for the flap)
    • the sidebar
  3. In Illustrator, the size of your document should be the width & height of the wrapper PLUS a 1/8" bleed.
  4. Create the template in Illustrator using the exact dimensions and guides to separate the front, sides, back and flap area of the bar.
  5. Name that layer 'template layer'
  6. Design your artwork on additional layers above the template layer

Printing

  • You are responsible for printing on your own.
  • When you print, do not resize - print actual size.
  • In the Print dialogue settings, go to "Marks and Bleeds". Check the box that says "Trim Marks".
  • You will get better results if you print on a semi-gloss, luster, or brochure type of paper.
  • PLEASE PRINT 2 COPIES!! (A folded one for the bar and a flat one to submit to me)
  • After you print, fold the sides carefully. I will show you in class how to print it with thin fold guides.
  • Use a glue stick to secure the flap on the back of the bar.

Project Submission

  • You will submit a completed, wrapperd bar and a second print that is not cut
