DMA102: Supermarket Tabloid Tutorial (Part I)

Part 1: Michael Jackson is in My Toast!

Here's the final result:

The Steps

  1. Download the zipped source folder of images.

  2. Open both images in Photoshop.

  3. Use the Move Tool (V) to drag the image of Michael Jackson onto the Toast document. Name the background layer "Toast" and the other layer "Michael". Immediately SAVE your file as a PSD file and continue to save your progress as your work.

  4. On the "Michael" layer, press CTRL+Shift+U (Mac: CMD+Shift+U) to desaturate the layer.

  5. On the "Michael" layer, press CTRL+T (Mac: CMD+T) to Transform. While holding the CTRL key, grab each corner and match the angle/perspective of the top toast. Press Enter to set the Transformation:

  6. Make sure you're still on the Michael layer. At the top of your screen, go to Filter > Convert for Smart Filters. Press 'OK' at the dialog box.

  7. In the Menu, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Enter a value of 4. Press OK.

  8. On the Michael layer, change the Blending Mode from Normal to Soft Light. Press the "Esc" key to set the Blending Mode. You should now have this:

  9. On the Michael layer, add a Layer Mask by clicking on the "Add Layer Mask" icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel.

  10. Press "B" for the Paintbrush. Right-click the brush and set the Hardness to Zero. Set the Brush diameter to around 200 px. With Black as the foreground color, mask away the obvious edges of the Michael layer. Your should end up with this:

  11. Add a Layer of Texture.
Select the "Toast" Layer. Use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to make a selection of the inner toast portion as shown below.:

  12. Then, press CTRL+J to duplicate it on its own layer. Name that new layer "Toast Texture". Move it to the top of the layer stack (above the Michael layer).

  13. On the Toast Texture layer, press CTRL+Shift+U to Desaturate. Change the Blending Mode from Normal to "Soft Light". Press Esc to set the Blending Mode. You should now have this:

  14. You can go back and tweak the Gaussian blur and opacity to finalize the look.
That's it! Save your file & stay tuned for Part II.
